Project
We have embellished two old drinking fountains/cattle troughs in Clapham, one is located by the Clapham Common tube station, the other is in the Old Town.

Process
I have selected a variety of plants for two different microclimates in the same area. The two troughs have different sun exposure, therefore the display is of shade loving plants in the first and sun loving plants in the second. I played with the colour and the texture of the foliage for a balanced pallet of seasonal herbaceous and evergreens.
Some of the plants we used have been propagated from the beds, like the Iris germanica and the Foeniculum vulgare (common fennel).
These are now a permanent display with a whole year round interest.
I hope that our green contribution helps revaluate those amazing historical urban features that were first erected in the 19th century as drinking fountains for cattle and horses. We are happy to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
